The Fourth Revolution: Bringing Yoga into Psychotherapy and Counseling–DAY 1 (12 CEUs available)
Jan 27 2012 - 6:30 PM-9:30 PM
Imagine that, as you are reading this, something frightens you. You feel your muscles tightening, your heart rate rising. If your nervous system is well-regulated, when the threat is over, the symptoms abate. However, for individuals experiencing chronic stress, and/or a history of personal trauma, the nervous system remains on high alert for a long time, maybe permanently, causing many symptoms which potentially damage the body and compromise the enjoyment of life.
This workshop presents a new dimension in psychotherapy and counseling: working directly with the nervous system. This shift in focus is revolutionizing the way that psychotherapy, and potentially medicine, are practiced. Yoga is playing a significant role in this shift.
It offers simple interventions from classic yoga to regulate the nervous system, based on the results of recent research like that from a three-year, NIH-funded study with women who have treatment-resistant complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. According to Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., founder of The Trauma Center, Brookline, MA, and principal investigator, participation in trauma-informed, gentle yoga lead to a 33% reduction in symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
Ms. Lutz presents trauma-informed yoga basics, with practicums and a script, on: chair-based yoga postures (the same sequence as practiced at The Trauma Center), breathing practices, yoga nidra (yogic sleep), relaxation and meditation. This course will train participants in leading therapy groups as well as individual sessions. It is applicable to a wide spectrum of psychological. No prior experience with yoga is required.
